On November 11, 2001, The New York Times featured the article "Where Islam Meets 'Brave New World.'" It profiled Al Noor School in Brooklyn, New York, "one of the largest Islamic schools in the country...Since Sept. 11 it has been even more crowded than usual as reporters descend on the unassuming three-story building to learn how the terror attacks affected Muslim students." The principal, Mr. Nidal Abuasi, noted, "'I think we should open up and talk to everyone,'... adding that the exposure has inspired confidence in students who were worried they would be portrayed in a negative light. It is all part of the balancing act this school must constantly perform: keeping children connected to the society they live in, while affording them the protected Islamic environment their parents seek."
