On November 5, 2001, The Ann Arbor News reported that "after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Ann Arbor police reached out to local Muslims. The move came during a national crisis, and new police Chief Dan Oates doesn't want to wait for such an event to meet again. 'That's a particular community that relies on the moral and spiritual leadership of their clergy members,' Oates said. 'We turned to representatives... including clergy to say, 'What can we do to understand your community and to reassure?''...Oates also wants similar relationships with all religions, so he's scheduled the first annual cops-and-clergy meeting" in Ann Arbor.
