On May 6, 2004 The Union-Tribune reported, "The planning group has voted unanimously to oppose conceptual plans for a Buddhist meditation center proposed for a hillside above the San Luis Rey Downs horse track, saying it wouldn't fit in the rural area. 'The design is more appropriate for a Grauman's Chinese Theatre than Bonsall,' said Charles Davis, vice chairman of the Bonsall Sponsor Group, which advises San Diego County on land-use issues. More than 130 people jammed the Bonsall Community Center for Tuesday night's meeting, most to express opposition. During the past several months, hundreds of Bonsall residents have signed petitions against the Dai Dang Meditation Center, which would add three buildings with a total of 22,800 square feet of space, and a 72-space parking lot to a nine-acre parcel that now contains a three-bedroom home where several monks live. The monastery was established on the property in 2001 by the Vietnamese Buddhist Meditation Congregation, followers of the Mayahana school of Zen Buddhism practiced in Vietnam."
