Hindus seeking to build a large temple in suburban Philadelphia have filed a federal lawsuit alleging that the township’s zoning and land development ordinances are infringing on their constitutional rights.

A Hindu group had sought approval for a 26,000-square-foot temple and a 9,000-square-foot auxiliary building. But township supervisors said that to mitigate adverse effects on the surrounding community, the temple should be no larger than 5,000 square feet.
