On December 9, 2003 Pakistan News Service announced that Mr. Masroor Javed Khan won the Dec. 6 election for a seat on the Houston City Council. "Mr. Khan won the election by 53 percent of the total cast votes. His opponent, Terry McConn, received 47 percent of the votes. Welcoming Mr. Khan's victory, National Council of Pakistani Americans' President Faiz Rehman said Mr. Khan's election to the Houston City Council, in the 5th largest U.S. city, is a major milestone for the Pakistani American community. 'Mr. Khan's victory by a wide margin reaffirms the fact that for the minorities, especially for Muslims, the proverbial American dream is still within reach,' he added.'Mr. Khan will serve as a role model for many young Pakistani Americans aspiring for a public office.' Mr. Khan is the second Pakistani Muslim to be elected in the United States. Mr. Saghir Tahir, member of the New Hampshire State Assembly, is the first and the highest Muslim and Pakistani elected to a public office."
