Pakistan Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has greeted Hindus on the occasion of Diwali and said the government is determined to safeguard the rights and interests of minority communities.

In a message to the Hindu community, Aziz said the majority and minority communities must move forward hand in hand in the march towards progress and development. He said Diwali aims at cultivating the spirit of selfless action, love and caring for others.

"Above all it demands traits of harmonious co-existence," he added.

In a separate message of greeting, former premier and PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto said her party "believes that the Hindus, indeed all minorities, of Pakistan are equal citizens of the state and must be given equal rights, including the right to vote for all candidates, along with Muslim voters".
