On June 27, 2004 Reuters reported, "More than a third of the Dutch surveyed are afraid of Muslims, and nearly three-quarters have little or no contact with people from that cultural background, according to a poll published yesterday. The survey of 813 adults by TNS NIPO pollsters for De Volkskrant newspaper found that 36 percent of the Dutch feel threatened by Muslims in the Netherlands and only 15 percent regard the culture positively. Half of the respondents fear that the Netherlands--which is home to an estimated 900,000 Muslims, or about 5.5 percent of the population--could become the target of an attack by Islamic fundamentalists such as the Madrid train bombings."
