On December 22, 2002 the Oroville Mercury Register reported that "the Oroville Chinese Temple, located at 1500 Broderick St., houses one of the largest collections of Chinese artifacts in the country... Of the 10,000 immigrants that occupied the Oroville area, almost 4,000 resided on Broderick Street alone, labeling that section of town 'Chinatown' said temple volunteer Dorothy Kissel... There was no place for them to worship so they began work on a temple of their own. The emperor of China sent money to help finance it, and the inhabitants of Chinatown built it with bricks made in Oroville... The temple was completed in 1863 and consisted of three chapels making up the principal areas of worship. The main chapel, the Temple of the Various Gods, includes assorted deities from Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism."
