On May 6, 2004 The Times Ledger reported, "A city judge ruled Friday that a Sikh traffic cop from Richmond Hill who resigned rather than cut his beard and shed his turban should be reinstated by the New York Police Department. Donna Merris, an administrative law judge, declared that the officer, Jasjit Singh Jaggi, had suffered from religious discrimination under the Police Department’s rules and should be allowed to wear a turban while on the job."
