On October 27, 2003 Pakistan Link reported that "more than 600 people gathered at the Chandni Restaurant in Newark, Calif. for an annual event that honors one of the great scientific institutions in the Muslim world, the Aligarh Muslim University, AMU. The Aligarh Muslim University Alumni Association, which has a large chapter in Northern California, organizes the event to promote fund-raising efforts for the university in northern India, and to keep alumni scattered across North America abreast of the university's progress. The event has become a tradition of sorts here as it brings together people from all over the region to honor the founder of the great center of learning, which is not as well known in the West. The man that was honored, Syed Ahmad Khan (also known as Sir Syed), established a college in Aligarh, India in 1872. The college became the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in 1920."
