With their heads covered and their feet bare, members of the Sikh Society of Madison and friends joyously celebrated the opening of a new gurdwara, or temple, on Sunday, followed by a community meal known as a langar.
About 300 colorfully dressed men, women and children gathered together to worship in the new, 6,300-square-foot space at 6790 Century Ave., which replaces a cramped 1,400-square-foot building on the same site. The location has been home to Madison-area Sikhs since 1997.
The temple is the fourth in Wisconsin, with two sites in Milwaukee and one in Appleton.
