On January 2, 2004 the Associated Press reported, "One of New Jersey's largest synagogues was temporarily closed and placed under police guard after a threat was made against it, authorities said. The threat against Temple Emanu-El in Westfield was deemed not credible late Wednesday, the Union County prosecutor said Friday, but police and road barriers remained as a precaution. Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow did not disclose the nature of the threat but said it did not involve a bomb. He said the threat was timed to the New Year's holiday period."
