BROOKSVILLE - Planning and zoning commissioners will consider a request today from the North American Islamic organization to build a 6,677-square-foot mosque off Barclay Avenue, south of Irving Street near The Oaks subdivision.

The proposed facility would replace a mosque at the site and be located on the same piece of property.

The new building would accommodate 434 people, compared to the current 60. All but 1,458 square feet of the mosque would be open for assembly and worship. The remaining space would be used for events, offices and other facilities.

The county planning office received three complaints from residents concerned that the size of the mosque would be visually incompatible with the homes in that area.

The project would require a revision to a special exception use permit to allow a place of public assembly. Planning and zoning staffers are recommending approval, with several stipulations.
