On February 19, 2006 Channel News Asia reported, "A Hindu temple, partly-funded by the Buddhist community, was officially opened in Sengkang on Sunday. The Arulmigu Velmurugan Gnanamuneeswarar Temple is known for organising inter-faith activities including the joint SARS prayers, Vesak celebrations and the Divine Lights Procession for World Peace. It took two and a half years to build and replaces three smaller Hindu temples that were closed. The Buddhist community donated more than $1.5 million of the temple's $7 million building costs. Dr Balaji Sadasivan, Senior Minister of State for Health and Information, Communication and the Arts, said: 'The key to racial integration is understanding other people's culture and religion so that we can live in harmony. Functions like this contribute towards that.'"
