On January 31, 2002 the Portsmouth Herald published an article in which members of the Eckankar religion explained their beliefs and practices. "Eckankar, called the religion of the Light and Sound of God, was introduced as a modern-day religion in 1965 by Paul Twitchell, the first Living ECK Master, responsible for the continued evolution of the Eckankar teachings. Eckankar offers simple spiritual exercises to experience the Light and Sound of God, or Holy Spirit... Denny Perrin of Kittery, a member of the Eckankar clergy, [said] 'Simply put, the teachings of Eckankar define the nature of Soul... We each are Soul, a divine particle of God sent into this world to gain spiritual experience. The goal in Eckankar is to attain spiritual freedom in this lifetime. One then becomes a co-worker with God, both here and in the worlds beyond.'"
