On February 5, 2006 the Appleton Post-Crescent reported, "Sikh numbers in the Fox Valley have been growing rapidly. The presence of the religion here was nearly nonexistent a decade ago. Five or six Sikh families in the Fox Valley began gathering for worship about five years ago. Since then, the number of Sikhs living here has rapidly increased, in large part because of an influx of families from India, where the religion is prominent. A lot of Indian families have moved here from Chicago, Madison and Milwaukee to pursue business opportunities, said [Amarjit Singh Kaleka of Neenah], who owns several area gas stations... Growth in the local Sikh community led to the purchase of the building on Midway Road, which opened as a new temple on Sept. 30. About 150 members now gather regularly there for worship... Fox Valley Sikhs who had been renting space for worship pooled their resources and purchased the former Jack's Steakhouse in Menasha last year. It was transformed into the Sikh Temple."
