On June 1, 2003 the Amarillo Globe News reported that a new Buddhist temple opened during the weekend in Albuquerque. The article stated that "the temple's completion fulfills the dream of The Venerable Charern Suksaeng, abbot of four monks of the Hinayana branch of Buddhism who moved to Albuquerque about a decade ago. The abbot, speaking Thai, said through an interpreter that the temple will serve more than 300 members, most of whom live outside of New Mexico."
