On March 14, 2003 The Independent reported that "after years of being the holder of the original Sacred White Buffalo Calf Woman pipe, [Oval Looking Horse,] spiritual leader of the Great Sioux Nation and founder of World Peace and Prayer Day... Looking Horse was the keynote speaker during Hastings College's Religion and Philosophy in Life Week... The focus this week has involved Native American spirituality... Being a spiritual leader as well as a peace activist, Looking Horse spoke not only about his trips to Iraq in 1990 to pray for peace, but also how history has an odd way of repeating itself... For the last several years, Looking Horse and his wife, Paula, have worked on World Peace and Prayer Day, which takes place every June 21. The day is not only dedicated to peaceful optimism and spirituality, but also raising issues about the environment and the destruction of the Native American way of life."
