On December 21, 2003 The Boston Herald reported that "alternately praising the reactions of the Boston police and condemning the religious profiling his followers have been subjected to after Sept. 11, Nation of Islam Minister Don Muhammad and other black leaders called yesterday for America's new vigilance to be tempered with tolerance. Minister Muhammad was speaking out after police cordoned off a street and called in the bomb squad after a worker at a Jewish community center panicked when she saw a van bearing Nation of Islam stickers, an Arabic-language sign and a copy of the Koran on the dashboard. Minister Muhammad was at the Edward Brooke Courthouse downtown with follower Michael Muhammad when they were told the Boston police wanted to talk to Michael about his black van, which he had parked next to Jewish Family & Children's Services. On the street, he was greeted by Boston police and the bomb squad."
