On May 1, 2005 The Arizona Republic reported, "Muslim Americans from across the Valley met at a workshop in Scottsdale on Saturday to mobilize their community against extremists trying to 'hijack' their religion. Eleven mosques are based in the Phoenix area.

Part of a national campaign by the Muslim Public Affairs Council, the workshop at the Via Linda Senior Center had twin goals, according to its organizer Rheem Khalife Kabbani, an information technology consultant from Scottsdale... Representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Scottsdale Police Department attended the meeting, which featured national Muslim leaders, including Dr. Maher Hathout, a frequent TV spokesman for American Muslims and an adviser to the public affairs group."
