On April 25, 2005 the Washington Square News reported, "finding places to pray has been a growing problem of the Islamic community [at New York University]. With the lease of their current space in the basement of the Catholic Center at NYU expiring, finding a new space for prayer, religious services and social gatherings poses a significant challenge. The problem is exacerbated by the lack of an Islamic chaplain or an official to serve as a liaison between the students and the NYU administration. Stephen Polniaszek, who heads the Spiritual Diversity Network at NYU, religious student groups receive standard university support like any NYU club, said but they must find their own means of sponsoring a chaplain. NYU is not required to hire or provide funds for religious leaders."
