On February 29, 2004 the Democrat and Chronicle published an article on Aly Nahas, vice chairman of the Commission on Christian Muslim Relations and an outspoken advocate for the Muslim community. He "is helping organize a series of lectures on March 4, 11, 18 and 25 called 'Islam 101.' They will explore topics such as the equality of women in the Quran, the sacred book of the faith, and in Muslims’ daily lives. 'When we understand each other, we are better citizens and better friends,' Nahas said. He is joined in his efforts by Peter Carman, pastor of Lake Avenue Baptist Church and chairman of the commission. Fostering a dialogue between people of different faiths has interested Carman since he spent part of his childhood in southern India, where he saw Muslims, Christians and Hindus living together peacefully."
