On November 12, 2004 Dallas Morning News reported, "a little more than a year after she was suspended for wearing a Muslim head scarf to school, Nashala Hearn now goes to school wearing it. And few people seem to notice, said Nashala, a 12-year-old student at the Seventh and Eighth Grade Center. Nashala can wear the hijab, required for Muslim women, now that the Muskogee Public Schools revised its dress code to help settle a federal lawsuit filed by Nashala's parents and the civil rights group the Rutherford Institute. In October 2003, Nashala was suspended from Benjamin Franklin Science Academy for refusing to remove her hijab at school."
