An evangelical Christian church group and a Victorian Muslim body it is accused of racially vilifying will go to mediation over their long-running row.

The Victorian Court of Appeal last December set aside a 2004 finding of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) that the Catch the Fire Ministries had vilified Muslims.

The court ordered that the case be returned to VCAT to be decided again, without the re-hearing of evidence.

Lawyer Hamish Redd, representing the Islamic Council of Victoria, told Judge Marilyn Harbison that both parties wished to first go to mediation and would go to a hearing if this failed.
