Every year for nearly 50 years, Davinder Deol calls her mother on Dec. 20 to wish her a “Happy Coming to America Day.”

On that day in 1959, Deol was only 4 years old, but it is a day she will always remember for changing her life.

“I know my life would be different if I were not here,” the 52-year-old vice principal of Tierra Buena School said. “Having been in the situation, most immigrants truly cherish being in America. (But) it’s important to preserve people’s stories before they are lost forever.”
