On June 12, 2006 the National Post reported, "She can't sleep, can't eat. But above all, she can't understand how her son got implicated in what police are describing as an al-Qaeda-inspired terrorist plot to kill Canadians. Since the eldest of her five children was charged with smuggling guns into Canada for an alleged homegrown terrorist group in Toronto, Asha Muhayadin has been looking for answers. 'It's my son,' the Somali refugee, who works on the packaging line at a baked goods factory, said in an interview at her Toronto apartment yesterday. 'I have to know'... She now knows this much: Her son, who was five when she brought him to Ontario from Mogadishu, sometimes worshipped at the Salaheddin Islamic Centre, where some of those accused in the terror plot also went to pray. Lately, he had been trying to make money by importing clothing [from the U.S.]... On their last shopping trip... [i]nstead of buying clothes, however, they went to Ohio and bought three semi-automatic handguns and almost 200 rounds of ammunition... After the gun charges were upped to terrorism on June 3... Mrs. Muhayadin spoke with her son by telephone, and he swore he was only trying to make money... Until she sees evidence to the contrary, Mrs. Muhayadin said she will continue to believe her son did no more than smuggle guns to earn a few hundred dollars. 'I don't know this,' she said, holding a copy of the charge sheet that accuses Yasin of smuggling guns for terrorist purposes, 'but I know my son.'"
