On September 20, 2004 The Sydney Morning Herald reported, "Australia's first Mormon temple, dominating the landscape on Pennant Hills Road, Carlingford, celebrates its 20th birthday today, amid church rejoicing and the rest of Sydney moving grudgingly towards greater religious tolerance...The church has worked hard at acceptance, contributing large sums annually to the Smith Family and putting a nativity scene on its front lawn each Christmas. But the muttering continues. At St Paul's, Carlingford, an Anglican evangelical church virtually under the temple's shadow, there's little or no contact with their neighbours. It employs a staff member to run an internet "Mormon Outreach", aimed at converting Mormons."
