On April 1, 2004 the Ealing Times reported, "More than 15,000 people are expected to take part in a religious parade this weekend. Members of the Sikh community across west London are expected to join thousands of people in a procession to mark the Sikh new year festival of Vaisakhi this Sunday. Police are warning those wishing to travel to Southall on Sunday to be aware of the road restrictions which will be in place. Chief Inspector Stuart Smith, of Ealing Police, explained: 'We anticipate 15,000 people taking part in the event and appeal to members of the public not participating in the event to avoid the area if at all possible, as congestion in the area will be high.'"
