On July 23, 2005 the Associated Press reported, "One million candles were to be lit at the ancient Borobudur temple in mostly Muslim Indonesia on Saturday as people of all faiths prayed for an end to terrorism, like the deadly bombings that have rocked Egypt and Britain. 'Terrorism must be regarded as the enemy of all religions,' said Dr. Syafii Maarif, former chairman of the country’s largest Islamic organization, Muhammadiyah. 'In the end, the forces of light, reason and hope must overpower the forces of darkness, despair and violence.' Thousands of people were expected at the two-hour ceremony Saturday night at Borobudur, a Buddhist temple complex built more than 1,100 years ago - about three centuries before the arrival of Islam."
