On March 13, 2004 The Grand Rapids Press reported, "Beverly Walker is no preacher, but the Chicago city administrator sounded like one as she issued a faith-fired challenge to nearly 250 West Michigan clergy and civic leaders. With schools crumbling, literacy lagging and prisons filling up, people of faith should use prayer as a springboard to transform their communities, Walker said Friday at a prayer breakfast convened by Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell... Walker's message resonated strongly with an interfaith gathering at the Western Michigan University's downtown campus, which featured Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Hindu prayers."
