On November 13, 2004 The Times of India reported, "Thousands of South African Indians and those from other communities attended gala public celebrations of Diwali as two major banks sponsored events to grab the attention of potential customers here.
Television viewers were in for a treat as well with the country's only full time service for Indian channels opening up the entire weekend free of charge to celebrate the Diwali and Eid festivals falling within two days of each other, something that happens once every three decades.
First National Bank sponsored the biggest Diwali festival replete with food, dance, music and fireworks displays. It was organised by the South African Hindu Maha Sabha and the Ethekwini municipal authority of the city on the beachfront at Durban."
