On August 9, 2006 icCoventry reported, "The Lord Mayor of Coventry is urging Prime Minister Tony Blair to bring about a peaceful end to the conflict in the Lebanon. Cllr Shabbir Ahmed, the city's first Muslim Lord Mayor, has written to Tony Blair urging him to take 'decisive action.' He is also calling on community leaders from all faiths and backgrounds to attend a meeting in his hospitality suite to discuss the crisis. Cllr Ahmed said: 'I've asked my office to invite everybody and not to miss anyone out - Jew, Sikh, Hindu, no matter their background or nationality.' He was moved to write to Mr Blair after night after night of bombing and attacks which forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes."
