On August 2, 2005 the Northwest Evening Mail reported, "A Buddhist temple has been branded an eyesore. To many the Manjushri Kadampa Buddhist Centre, at Conishead Priory, Ulverston, is a peaceful place of refuge. But in a council debate about proposed changes to the centre’s roof, Councillor Brenda Marr said: 'I was not happy with the building when it went up. I thought it was an eyesore. I don’t think it fits in with the surroundings at all.' The owners of the World Peace Buddhist Temple want to remove a slate roof and replace it with a golden glass one to provide more light inside the temple... If South Lakeland planners approve the application the new golden-glassed lantern structure would be similar in design to a temple at another Buddhist centre in America."
