A local Muslim leader believes the attack on the Islamic Center of Northeast Florida was meant to intimidate thousands of area Muslims after tensions boiled over in the city.
Akif Aydin, director of the Amity Turkish Cultural Center, said tensions over Parvez Ahmed's recent nomination to the city's Human Rights Commission could have played a role in the attack on the mosque.
He also said tension over the attempted car bombing in New York's Time Square could have contributed. The suspect in that case is Muslim.
Aydin and group leaders for OneJax, an interfaith group, hope the attack at the Islamic Center of Northeast Florida is isolated.
