A prayer book in his hand, Mehran Bashiri prayed for seven strangers who were persecuted in Iran because of their participation in the Baha'i Faith.

Bashiri, 48, and other Baha'i members from San Mateo County met in a devotional gathering last Thursday night at Linda Duper's home in Pacifica, where they remembered all those who are oppressed and abused.

Among the recipients of the group's prayers were two women and five men who are held at Evin Prison in Tehran while awaiting trial. They are accused of spying on behalf of Israel and using propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran, whose official state religion is Shiite Muslim, said Duper, a member of the Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'i of Pacifica.

Aside from their prayers, local Baha'is have joined national and international efforts to release the Iranian Baha'is and end systematic persecution. Letters have been sent to Rep. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, and both of California's U.S. senators, Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein.
