On May 11, 2003 The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that "in the contest for Orthodox students' commitment, some fear that the lure of a more liberal university life will win out over the rigors of maintaining tradition... 'Being religious in college is not the most convenient thing,' said Harry Reisig, an Orthodox Jew and 25-year-old law student at the University of Pennsylvania... Reaching young people such as Reisig is the objective of a new program designed to prevent traditions from eroding in the wake of what for many Orthodox students is the first taste of real independence... The Jewish Learning Initiative provides student support on campus in the form of married couples who offer mentoring, Jewish learning, and counseling primarily to Orthodox students. The program was developed by the Orthodox Union, a nonprofit social service, educational and outreach organization that represents 1,000 synagogues in North America."
