On December 16, 2002 the Orlando Sentinel reported that "Central Florida Muslims welcomed leaders from top Islamic groups across the country to join them... They heard each other's frustrations, shared perspectives and vowed to unify to end discrimination against Florida Muslims. Now, they hope to unite blacks, Christians, Hispanics and others in their fight. The national leaders directed Central Florida Muslims to build alliances with other groups, such as the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, to visit churches and synagogues, and to convince law enforcement of the need to have more cultural sensitivity. Nearly 200 people gathered at the Islamic Society of Central Florida's worship center in Orlando to discuss how to stop actions they say have curtailed civil rights since Sept. 11."
