On February 22, 2006 an Islamic Society of North America Press Release reported, "The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) has termed a plan by an Iranian newspaper to solicit cartoons denying the Nazi Holocaust as an unwise step in combating the ignorance displayed by the Danish cartoonist.
Iran’s Hamshahri newspaper says the contest is in reaction to the publication in Europe of cartoons mocking Islam’s Prophet Muhammad. The controversy over those cartoon sparked worldwide protests.
ISNA President Muhammad Nur Abdullah reminded that the Quran (5:8) states, 'O ye who believe! stand out firmly for Allah, as witnesses to fair dealing, and let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is next to piety: and fear Allah. For Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do.'
The ISNA President said that the act ignorance committed by the Danish cartoonist and their European supporters should not be answered by causing emotional distress to another community. He reminded that the hour required people of all faiths to avoid inflammatory actions. 'We call on Hamshahri newspaper to drop its plans to denigrate the immense suffering caused by the Nazi Holocaust and urge the Iranian government to advise its media to repudiate such insensitive proposals.'"
