On May 28, 2004 The Mercury News reported, "Memorial Day began Thursday evening in Palo Alto, with a crowd of about 150, dressed mostly in black. Many people carried flowers, with the informal look of the backyard-picked. Others carried olive branches. A trumpeter played taps, people made speeches and said prayers. Then, men and women and some children -- Muslims, Jews, Protestants, Roman Catholics, Buddhists, Quakers, Unitarian Universalists and followers of other traditions quietly formed a line to pick up empty caskets. This was a march organized by the Multifaith Voices for Peace."
