On May 26, 2006 Cleveland Jewish News reported, "Clapping and singing 'We Are Living the Life of God,' over 100 clergy from Northeast Ohio marched down the aisles of a Cleveland Play House theater, up onto the stage, and into the political arena. In their clerical collars, skullcaps, kipot and turbans, the interfaith group of Christians, Muslims, Jews and Sikhs last week launched We Believe Cleveland, a campaign to combat what they call the divisiveness and intolerance of religious conservatives. With prayers, songs and rousing speeches, the liberal and moderate clergy sought to focus societal debate on critical moral issues such as poverty, health care, education and housing, rather than on divisive ones about gay marriage and abortion. Although they represent myriad faiths, the clergy all recognize a God 'who loves, unites and embraces, not one who rejects, divides and excludes,' said Rabbi Richard Block of The Temple-Tifereth Israel, co-chair of the event. 'I'm unaware of any religious authority unconcerned with the poor, or (one) that sanctions indifference to human suffering or intolerance.' He urged the overflow crowd to defend the constitutional separation of church and state, which has allowed religion to flourish. 'We must refrain from using the law to afford privileged status to our own faith,' he said."
