Perched on her father’s shoulders with an umbrella balanced above her, 5-year-old Caroline Bowling understood why she and her family were walking in the rain on Sunday.

“To make other people have money to buy food,” she said.

It was a simple explanation to the complicated problem of hunger, a cause that drew more than 600 walkers, runners and cyclists to Waterfront Park for the 28th annual Community Hunger Walk sponsored by the Kentuckiana Interfaith Community.

Despite darkened skies and rainy weather, the walk, which was also the opening event of the Center for Interfaith Relations 2006 Festival of Faiths, raised thousands of dollars, money that will support the 16 area Community Ministries of Louisville Metro, Kentucky Harvest’s “Blessings in a Backpack,” Dare to Care’s backpack program, and an agricultural program in West Africa that teaches farming skills to women so they can create a sustainable food source.

The event raised more than $28,000, with more donations coming in, putting organizers well on their way to reaching their goal of $50,000.
