On February 9, 2004 Religion News Service reported, "The Association of Humanistic Rabbis is today issuing its statement 'In Support of Diverse Sexualities & Gender Identities' . Recent court decisions have widened public discussion on sexual minority rights and same-sex marriage in the US. Many AHR members have advocated such equality and performed such ceremonies since the emergence of Humanistic Judaism as a movement in the 1960s. Yet Humanistic Rabbis feel that this is a critical moment in US history where open-minded and open-hearted moral leadership is needed to help our society and the world transcend all bigotries. Thus, the Association of Humanistic Rabbis publicly declares its support for the full equal rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals and their families, and for social change toward understanding and celebrating human diversity. The AHR is the first rabbinical association to publicly encourage all its members to officiate at same-sex weddings and to advocate wide-ranging legal and social change to support sexual minorities in both public and private spheres."
