Humanist weddings have soared in popularity since they were legally recognised in Scotland, BBC Scotland has learned.

Figures obtained from the Humanist Society show there were more than 400 last year - a five-fold increase on the figure for 2004.

The first legally recognised humanist wedding was in June 2005.

Previously, a marriage service was only legally binding if carried out by a minister of religion or a registrar.

Last year 434 couples had a humanist wedding. In 2004 there were just 80.
