On December 17, 2003 the Ventura County Star reported that "members of the Conejo Valley's Jewish community gathered Tuesday afternoon to support a Holocaust survivor whose Hanukkah flag was burned this past weekend in what is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

Victoria Monina, 71, had hung a flag decorated with a blue and silver menorah and the words 'Happy Hanukkah' on it in front of her Thousand Oaks home on Dec. 7.Sunday morning, however, only one-third of the flag hung tattered and burned on the 4-foot wooden pole at the front of her garage. Chabad officials offered to install a six-foot-high wooden menorah, the nine-branched candelabra used in Hanukkah celebrations, in Monina's front yard. About 40 people came to Monina's home off Rockfield Street Tuesday to watch while the menorah was installed, along with a new Hanukkah banner... According to the Anti-Defamation League, there were 223 anti-Jewish incidents in California in 2002, an increase of 83 percent over 2001. Nationally, the ADL recorded 1,559 anti-Semitic incidents in 2002, up from 1,432 in 2001."
