Hindu Fest Has Food for Thought

The words are from another continent, so they feel a little strange on the tongue.

The treats they represent do not.

Some are salty, most are sweet, and one tastes like grainy peanut butter fudge.

All are delicacies Springfield Hindus look forward to tasting at the annual celebration of Diwali, the most joyous Hindu holiday.

The same snacks might provide food for thought for those skeptical that religious holidays share universal traits. Explained Springfielder and New Delhi native Vanita Khanna: "All are fattening."

Springfield's Hindu community is inviting everyone to get in on the fattening fun Saturday, Oct. 18, at Diwali 2008.

Festivities will begin with a gourmet Indian dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. at Elderly United catered by Amar India. A colorful pageant of dancing and music will follow at 7:30 p.m. in the Kuss Auditorium.

This year's move to the auditorium puts the festival on a larger stage. But the origins of the local Diwali celebration are in the homes and, ultimately, the hearts of those leading the celebration.
