On September 18, 2003 Tampa Bay Online reported that "a scheduling conflict between Sickles High School's homecoming dance and game and a major Jewish holiday has forced some students to pick between faith and friends." The homecoming football game against Newsome that Friday and the dance at the University of South Florida on Saturday coincide with Rosh Hashana, the start of the Jewish new year. "22 other Hillsborough County public schools will play varsity football games that Friday... Sickles did consider students' religions, Hart said, and estimated about 100 students of the more than 2,000 were Jewish."
