On November 10, 2004 news.com.au/Herald Sun reported, "Jewish students face losing VCE marks next year after Hebrew language exams were scheduled for a work-free holy day. For the first time in almost 35 years, the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority refused to change the 2005 exam schedule so the tests did not fall on Jewish religious days. Jewish students are not allowed to travel, study or even write during the Festival of Sukkot, also known as the Season of our Rejoicing, which is held on October 18 and 19 next year. VCAA scheduled the written Hebrew and Russian language exams for October 18. Association of Principals of Jewish Day Schools of Australasia president Samuel Gurewicz said about 120 students studying Hebrew would lose crucial marks for their university entrance scores... A letter from VCAA manager (assessment operations) Ian Leggett, dated November 3, says 'unfortunately it has been decided' the October 18 date could not be changed because it matched language exams in other states and would add another exam day to an already full schedule if it was moved."
