On May 15, 2003 House.gov reported that "Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur today joined Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA) to introduce legislation in the House of Representatives condemning violence and bigotry against Arab Americans, Muslim Americans, South Asian Americans and Sikh Americans. 'The district I represent is an example of coexistence between America’s beautifully diverse residents. Vibrant ethnic communities and religious centers stand testament to our region's diversity and advance the cause of understanding. Doctors, lawyers, trades people, engineers, teachers, business owners, and law enforcement officials from all of these communities have created a true microcosm of America’s melting pot. We are every variety of Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Baha’i, Sikh and secular, and come from every ethnic background. It is in this interest and in the affirmation of peaceful coexistence that I have introduced this important legislation,' the Congresswoman concluded... A version of H. Res. 234 has also been introduced in the Senate by Richard Durbin (D-IL), John Sununu (R-NH), and Russ Feingold (D-WI). The Issa-Kaptur bill has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary."
