On November 8, 2003 The News Journal reported that "Delaware Sikhs have faced minor discrimination, said Nirmal Singh, a priest who serves Sikhs in Delaware, but the faithful here would like to be better understood. With that in mind, Sikhs have invited others to join them at the Elsmere Fire Company on Nov. 16 to celebrate one of their happiest occasions. It's the anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak, the prophet who founded their faith in the Punjab region of northwest India, Singh said... Most Sunday mornings, about 30 Sikhs gather for worship in the Sikh Center, located in a white frame house on New Road in Elsmere. Delaware Sikhs say they are looking into a new center, sometimes called a gurudwara (or door of the guru), that would hold more people for services and meals."
