On October 21, 2003 The Appeal-Democrat reported that "a federal judge in Sacramento is deciding the fate of a religious discrimination lawsuit against Sutter County. U.S. District Senior Judge Lawrence Karlton listened to about 30 minutes of arguments Monday from attorneys representing the county and the Guru Nanak Sikh Society of Yuba City, which tried twice but failed to win approval for a new temple. The Sikh group sued the county in August 2002, a few months after county supervisors, reversing a Planning Commission decision, rejected the proposed temple on South George Washington Boulevard."
